Product Design Engineer

We are thrilled to offer an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to join our team.

Main purpose of role:

The Product Design Engineer will be responsible for the design, prototype build, verification and validation of new products, with a particular focus on on Industrial Design and UX. Working across the Technical, Quality and Operations departments, the successful candidate will ensure consumer-focused, viable and validated product is scalable for production, to the agreed specification and at the desired costs.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  • Ability to capture and specify the design and development requirements, and detail any validation needed to deliver successful systems, products and components, to meet and exceed customer expectations.
  • An advanced and demonstrable understanding of 3D modelling. Preferably Onshape, although Solidworks will be considered.
  • Costed bill of materials creation, review and ownership, utilising the D365 ERP system.
  • Familiarity with deploying design and development tools including:

RFQ (Requests for Quotation)

Design reviews

NPD&I Processes (New Product Development & Introduction)

FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis)

PPAP (Production Parts Approval Process)

DV&PV (Design Verification & Product Validation

DQTP (Design Qualification Test Plan)

Project Management.

  • Report on design, costs, engineering changes, and budgetary information effectively to your line manager.
  • Give regular progress updates to the wider business.

Supporting Research & Development

  • Champion the Technical Department and promote best practice in every step of the development process.
  • Create and lead initial Feasibility Studies, ROI calculations, and create project-based business cases and project justification documentation.
  • Take ownership of aspects of project management for specific workstreams, with ongoing support from senior members of the Technical and Quality teams.
  • Understand, seek and contribute cutting edge technologies and methods from personal research and competitor activity.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and customers to ensure Centurion repeatedly delivers to expectations and maintains its best-in-class status.
  • Design, build, and test in line with relevant standards and legislation.
  • Perform mechanical calculations relevant to the material, product or process under development.
  • Consistently promote high standards, leading by example to all employees beyond the department.
  • Champion the business’ core values in all activities and interactions.
  • Be empowered to make decisions and to escalate issues that carry significant risk.
  • Contribute to the upkeep and maintenance of compliance documentation.

Educational qualifications or experience:

Essential:

  • Degree or equivalent experience in relevant field: mechanical engineering, product design, industrial design, or similar.
  • Demonstrable experience to design, build, verify and validate a variety of products.
  • Ability to effectively interact with multiple areas of the business, and at all levels.
  • A sound understanding of CAD packages and PDM systems.
  • Knowledge of rapid prototyping techniques.
  • Knowledge of working with Bills of Material.
  • Knowledge of injection moulding and sheet metal manufacturing technologies.

Desirable:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in relevant field
  • An understanding of how AI can be applied and harnessed to aid product development.
  • Familiarity with designing for plastics.
  • Understanding of Design for Manufacture (DFM).
  • Understanding of Lean manufacturing principles.
  • Knowledge and experience of operating in an ISO 9001 environment.

Pay: £38,000.00-£40,000.00 per year
