Innovation : Nexus E:Protect

Why Sustainability Matters in Head Protection

At Centurion, we believe innovation must be rooted in responsibility. The decision to develop a more sustainable helmet wasn’t a marketing strategy – it was a mission. PPE, by nature, is high turnover. That means traditional plastic helmets often end up as waste after a single lifecycle.

We set out to change that.

Nexus E:Protect represents a step-change in how safety helmets are designed, made, used, and recovered – bringing environmental performance to the same level as physical protection.

Reimagining Materials: How It’s Made

The Nexus E:Protect shell is manufactured by using advanced biocomposite technology, combining natural and renewable inputs with engineering-grade durability. This unique blend reduces reliance on fossil fuels while maintaining the strength needed in the toughest environments.

  • Made from responsibly sourced FSC timber and ISCC-certified materials, our polymer includes traceable renewable content derived from vegetable oils and cooking oil waste – reducing CO₂ emissions through more sustainable sourcing.

  • E:Protect uses our highest-performing biocomposite, specifically engineered to replace traditional engineered plastics in demanding, safety-critical environments.

This innovative formulation lowers the helmet’s carbon footprint without compromising performance.

Sustainability with Substance

E:Protect is engineered not only for safety, but also to reduce environmental impact at every stage of its life cycle.

  • Lower CO₂ Emissions
Significantly reduced CO₂ emissions compared to ABS. Processing requires no drying or curing, and uses lower moulding temperatures.

  • Carbon Sink Effect
Biogenic carbon in E:Protect is calculated as a carbon sink, storing more carbon than is needed for production – delivering negative carbon emissions

  • End-of-Life Advantage
Wood fibres in E:Protect score a zero CO₂ value if incinerated, further improving lifecycle impact compared to fossil-based ABS

Even the packaging is designed with care – 100% recyclable and printed with plant-based inks.

The Smarter Alternative to ABS

E:Protect is a bio-based, low-impact material designed to replace conventional ABS plastics. Developed with sustainability at its core, E:Protect provides superior environmental performance while maintaining strength and usability for modern applications.

Lifecyle Impact

The cradle-to-gate (LCA), measured using Earthster LCA software and the Ecoinvent database, shows that E:Protect’s footprint is considerably smaller than ABS. Further reductions are expected at end-of-life due to its renewable content and recyclability.
