Buying PPE should be simple:
You choose it, trust it, it protects you.
But recent industry testing suggests it’s not always that straightforward.
Both goverment-back testing programmes and independent research are continuing to highlight a concern across the market – not all products being sold meet the standards they claim to.
So what’s actually happening?
The UK’s Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has been actively testing products sold through online marketplaces to to check they meet safety requirements.
You can read read the full findings here.
At the same time, the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) has been carrying out its own market surveillance – and the findings are hard to ignore.
- 82% of PPE tested from non-registered suppliers failed to meet requirements
- In some categories, failure rates reached 100%
- By comparison, products from verified suppliers (like Centurion) showed consistently high compliance levels
That’s not a small gap. That’s a clear divide.
Why it matters
The real issue isn’t just compliance – it’s confidence.
Because when PPE doesn’t perform as expected, people are exposed to risk thinking they’re protected when they’re not.
And with more products being bought online than ever before, it’s becoming harder to spot the difference between:
- properly tested, certified equipments
- and products that simply look the part
What should buyers be looking for?
This isn’t about making things complicated – just a few key checks:
- Correct markings
CE or UKCA marks should be clear and properly applied – not just there for show.

- Proof behind it
If needed, the supplier should be able to back it up with real certification. - A name you trust
Buy from suppliers who can stand behind what they sell.
