Heat Stress in the Workplace | How to Protect Workers in Hot Weather

As summer temperatures continue to rise, protecting workers from heat stress should be a priority, protecting workers from heat stress should be a priority for every employer. Those working outdoors, in utilities, manufacturing and infrastructure are particularly at risk.

While PPE is essential for protection, hot weather can make working conditions more challenging. Understanding the signs of heat stress and taking simple preventative measures can help workers stay safe, comfortable and productive.

What is heat stress?

Heat stress occurs when the body is unable to cool itself effectively. This can happen when high air temperatures, humidity, direct sunlight and physical exertion combine, causing body temperatures to rise faster than it can be regulated.

Factors such as the type of clothing or PPE worn, fitness levels, age and how well someone has acclimatised to the heat can all influence how susceptible they are to heat stress.

Signs and symptoms of heat stress

Recognising the early warning signs is essential. Workers experiencing heat stress may suffer from:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle cramps
  • Increased body temperature

If left untreated, heat stress can develop into more serious conditions, including heat exhaustion or heat stroke, requiring immediate medical attention.

How to reduce the risk

Employers can help minimise the risk of heat stress by introducing simple controls before and during the working day.

Before Work

  • Ensure workers understand the risks of hot weather.
  • Encourage regular hydration before work begins.
  • Allow time for workers to acclimatise to hotter conditions.
  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing where appropriate.

During the working day

  • Drink water regularly to stay hydrated.
  • Schedule physically demanding tasks during cooler parts of the day where possible.
  • Take regular rest breaks in shaded or cooler areas.
  • Adjust workloads to suit environmental conditions.
  • Protect the head and neck from sunlight.

Small changes can make a big difference

Preventing heat stress doesn’t always require major changes. Planning ahead, encouraging good hydration and providing accessories designed for hot weather can all help improve comfort while reducing the risk of heat-related illness.

As temperatures become more frequent and more extreme, ensuring workers are prepared for hot conditions is an important part of any workplace safety strategy.
